Comments from an attendee:
It was a very meaningful time for me because I remember so much about the war. I was a small child when D Day happened and I have been to Omaha Beach and the cemetery there. I cried then and I cried yesterday. You have to have been there to see how our poor servicemen were slaughtered trying to get up the beach. They were like sitting ducks to the Nazi’s. I can only imagine the horror of it. We should always be mindful of the sacrifice of life that was made for our freedom. Thank you so much for inviting me. I was very touched by the stories of the men who served.

THE RITCHIE BOYS: SECRET HEROES

Imagine Being German, Jewish and an American Soldier During the Holocaust

Their existence was a well-kept secret. To this day, the exploits and strategic importance of the Ritchie Boys are virtually unknown.

The Ritchie Boys were a group of young, mostly Jewish, mostly German and Austrian boys who had immigrated to the United States. They were drafted into the United States Army, often after first being rejected as "enemy aliens," and were trained at Camp Ritchie, the Military Intelligence Training Center, in Maryland.

Exhibit Dates: Now through August 27th, 2012

On November 11, 2010 America honored its veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. In Dallas, the day held special significance, as it marked the launch of a new national non-profit organization—Daughters of World War II

On Veteran’s Day, November 11 in the Hall of State at Fair Park, the Daughters of World War II publicly launched its organization and honored 100 beloved World War II veterans at the inaugural luncheon. Daughters of World War II is founded by First Lady of Dallas, Laura Leppert, and Deborah B. Guerriero, both of whose fathers fought in WWII in Nagasaki, Japan.

At this inaugural event, the Daughters of WWII publicly launched its mission as a non-political volunteer women’s service and educational organization dedicated to promoting patriotism and preserving this crucial cornerstone of America’s and the world’s history.

Daughters of WWII presented the first “Allies for Freedom” Award to James "Maggie" Megellas, the most-decorated officer in the history of the 82nd Airborne Division, retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and paratrooper who was known for bravery in European battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. He has received a Distinguished Service Cross, a Silver Star and the Daughters of the American Revolution national medal. Megellas wrote his memoir, All the Way to Berlin: A Paratrooper at War in Europe. He is serving as one of the four grand marshals of this year’s Veteran’s Day parade in Dallas.

A Letter of Thanks from one of the Veterans in Attendance

Thank you, and through you a thanks to all who made your wonderful celebration possible. I believe the speaker spoke wonderful words when he mentioned that honoring the veterans of WW II would be by honoring the things they fought for. That is to carry the torch or pass the baton to succeeding generations. We loved our country and our families but we knew also there were those who did not fully participate and we wanted to change that too after the war would end. And again, only with God’s grace was it accomplished. I say accomplished because I believe it has really happened—all it takes is to step over the dead body and get on with ones life.

Yesterday, I had the privilege of being in one of the open automobiles as it made it’s way through downtown Dallas to the reviewing stand (a red ’73 Corvette-driven by it’s owner Gary Davis of Burleson). I notice the parade lined with people of all races, gender, age groups, and cultures all united in showing respect for this blessed land of ours. I was truly looking at our America, a country which exists by the grace of God—blessed by exceptional people, only through God’s grace. I was so very grateful to see those smiles and hear the “thank you’’ which came so richly to my ears.

Then, for my wife Jo Ann, and I to be able to participate in your outstanding event was a fitting event for a most wonderful day. (I was there associated with that wonderful group of young ladies of the Honor Flight and have recently been the recipient of their love, patience, and generosity by traveling to Washington, D.C.) I felt the words of Mrs. Leppert as though she were my own daughter and I realized maybe I have not done enough to let her realize there are millions of daughters who want to share their dads experiences in some manner or purpose. I told her of your organization and asked if she might like to join. She responded, not with a reluctance to become involved, but said, “yes dad, I would like that-I think it would be good for me.” I felt her answer to be another breakthrough in her stressed life.

There is so much to be said for the benefits of old age and it was demonstrated yesterday. God bless you all.

Sincerely,

Victor J. Hancock
